Stephen Curry Delights Oakland Students with a Fun Play Day: Encouraging Active Lifestyles among Children

Even during the off-season, Stephen Curry, the point guard of Golden State Warriors, is engaging with local fans and scoring big points. Earlier this week, Curry surprised a group of students in Oakland, California for a day of play organized by his Eat.Learn.Play. Foundation. San Francisco ABC station KGO was present to capture the sights and sounds of the special afternoon.

A group of students from Elmhurst United Middle School posed for a picture in front of the parked Eat.Play.Learn bus, and the four-time NBA champion emerged in the background, yelling, “I’m smiling, say ‘cheese’.” The event represented all three pillars of Curry’s nonprofit mission. “We’re on a playground, so we’re gonna play. We’ve got books, so we’ll read and learn. And then we’ve got fresh produce and items they can take home for the eat portion, so we’re really hitting all three pillars,” he told KGO’s Chris Alvarez.

He believes that engaging in physical activity and playing with kids from different backgrounds allows for self-discovery and fosters a sense of community. Overall, Curry’s message was centered on the power of connection and the potential for positive change through small acts of kindness and engagement.

The Akron, Ohio native reflected on his own upbringing and how he was fortunate enough to not have to worry about finding places to play sports or kids his age to play with. He believes that such environments are crucial for children’s development and every child deserves access to them. Through his foundation, he aims to provide creative ways to implement these opportunities in the Oakland community, whether it’s refurbishing playgrounds or sponsoring programs that offer positive coaching and resources. The Eat.Play.Learn Foundation, co-founded by Curry and his wife Ayesha in 2019, is filled with like-minded leaders who are taking the vision of what they want and connecting with the community. Curry is proud of the organization’s commitment to staying true to their three pillars and believes that their work will continue to change lives and support the children they want to help.
